As any teacher knows, movies are a powerful force in shaping students mental visions of events. Unfortunately, many movies are not only "historically inaccurate," they are often "hysterically inaccurate." Yet, they are powerful cultural forces that form, reshape and reinvent their subject matter. They are both a force of agency in shaping Custer's image as well as a reflection of their times. Here are a few examples (both clips and some entire movies) of Custer and the the Battle of the Little Bighorn as Hollywood envisioned them. Pay attention to the themes they portray and notice how they changed over time.
Custer's Last Fight (1912 - through the tag erroneously says 1925)
They Died with Their Books On (1941)
Sitting Bull (1954)
Tonka (1958)
Custer of the West (1967) - Note the scene with final stages of that battle is one that I would characterize as "hysterically inaccurate" (around 2:10:20)
Select Scenes from "Son of the Morning Star" (1990)
Little Big Man (1970)
